"Anna Karenina" (2012) - First pictures

First pictures were released from upcoming period drama "Anna Karenina", based on the novel by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy.

Keira Knightley looks gorgeous, but very miserable, as Anna. And she should be, because her character's fate is very unfortunate. It is not the first time she works with a talented director Joe Wright, and every time they end up making a great film.

Other parts are played by Aaron Johnson and Jude Law. We can see that Anna is very happy dancing with Johnson's character and looks nervous near Jude Law, who plays her husband. If you read the novel, you know how this love triangle ends.

This film is going to be in cinemas this fall.

Movie Talk on Sunday - British Films

I like MTOS, but I can't participate very often. The last one was about British films, so I thought I should answer the questions anyway (even four days later). But I started answering them, I understood that I'm not very familiar with true British cinema. I hope to catch up later. All questions were thought up by two hosts - @thommoj03 and @maxwellhubbard.

1. What is your all-time favourite British film?
"The Duchess", because it has Keira Knightley, who is always great in historical dramas; is based on the interesting life of a real person; is very dramatic, visually stunning, and its score is great.

2. Who do you consider the best British director?
Charlie Chaplin is my favourite. I watched every film (!) made by him or where he stared. If I had to choose alive directors, I'd say Tom Hooper (yes, I enjoyed "The King's Speech" very much); Richard Ayoade ("Submarine" is one of the best films I've seen in 2011) and Joe Wright (because of "Atonement" and his "Pride and Prejudice" adaptation).

3. Who is the best British actor/actress alive today?
I can't name the only one actor and just the only one actress. James McAvoy, Ralph Fiennes, Ian McKellen, Rhys Ifans, Alan Rickman, John Hurt, Colin Firth, Bill Nighy, Jude Law, Christian Bale are good and great: on the other hand there are Helena Bonham Carter, Keira Knightley, Maggie Smith, Emma Thompson, Julie Andrews, Kristin Scott Thomas, Kate Winslet. If I forgot someone I hope they won't be offended.

4. What characteristics define 'the best of British'?
Intelligence, originality, wise budget use, talented actors.

5. What genre does British cinema do best? (give examples)
I'm a big fan of period dramas (see films mentioned in this post before).

6. What makes British films different from mainstream Hollywood movies?
Everything. Mainstream Hollywood movies are all the same (meaningless comedies with stupid jokes or action flicks with lots of invisible 3D). What I like about British films is that they aren't becoming mainstream, though David Cameron thinks they should (don't listen to him). Also it is great that British filmmakers don't forget their history and continue adapting classics.

7. Do you think British films are better than those from America?
Definitely. Because British directors are trying to make something new, and not to remake something old.

8. If you could get a cinema re-release for one British film what would it be?
My childhood dream is to watch two first Harry Potter films on the big screen.

9. 2011 was a great year for film. Which British film was the best of the bunch last year?
"Submarine" by Richard Ayoade.

10. Finally, which British film will wow audiences this year?
I'm waiting for "The Woman in Black", "Skyfall", and "The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey" is also partly British.

If you know some great British films, please write them in comments below so I could watch them! Thank you.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" London premiere

I watched the premiere of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" online yesterday and I enjoyed it! It was small and cozy; all actors and Guy Ritchie came, smiled and were interviewed by Edith Bowman.

Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law seem to become good friends. Robert was in a great mood, he danced a little (to entertain us or to get warmer). But I have one question for Jude Law. I'm just curious is there any tradition which makes actors stop shaving after they made a big film? Every time some actor finished filming, he starts appearing with a huge beard. Weird.

The weather was cold, men were wearing suits, scarves and coats, but Noomi Rapace, who played the main female part in this film, was in a strapless gown. I hope she didn't become an ice sculpture. She talked about how she was preparing for her Gypsy role, planning even to live in a camp, but she hadn't enough time for this. Noomi Rapace enjoyed working with such talented men and now she considers herself as "one of the boys."

Jared Harris doesn't look like a villain at all and seems to be a very cheerful person. But I hope his Professor Moriarty is persuasive.

Stephen Fry called Guy Ritchie "an extraordinary filmmaker." He portrayed Mycroft Holmes, Sherlock's brother. Can't wait to see what his role in this story is.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" (2011) - Funny clip

New clip from Guy Ritchie's "Sherlock Holmes: A Game Of Shadows" makes me even more exited about its upcoming release.

I like how Jude Law says: "Oh, How I've Missed You Holmes!" Of course, Sherlock pretends he had plenty of things to do without his dearest companion, but we know he missed him too. And I missed them both.

There is one interesting scene, which lasts 1 or 2 seconds, where Dr. Watson didn't notice Holmes. Can you say where he is before you watch this clip? It shouldn't be difficult.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Jared Harris, Eddie Marsan, Stephen Fry and Noomi Rapace.

Release dates - December 16 (UK, USA), December 22 (Germany), December 23 (Ukraine)

And I'm going to watch London premiere online this evening, are you too?

"Sherlock Holmes 2" (2011) - Second trailer

Brand new "A Game of Shadows" trailer has been revealed and it looks great. The Trio (aka Holmes, Watson and dangerously beautiful Ms. Adler) are in big trouble again. There are new villain, new secrets, new shootings and Sherlock Holmes has a new lipstick. Costumes, special effects and gothic decorations are incredible and created a dramatic atmosphere. And I'm glad that this film will be also full of witty jokes and sarcasm of the main characters.

Favourite line:
- What do you see?
- Everything. That is my curse.

Starring Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Rachel McAdams, Jared Harris (son of talented actor Richard Harris), Eddie Marsan, Stephen Fry and Noomi Rapace.
Directed by Guy Ritchie.

Release dates - December 16, 2011 (UK, USA), December 22, 2011 (Germany)

Top-10 movies, which you should watch in the movie theaters this fall.

1. "CONTAGION"

Tagline - "Don't talk to anyone. Don't touch anyone."

There is a virus, but no zombies? That's something new. With good cast and Steven Soderbergh's talent it is a new drama that shows how people act in such critical worldwide situation. And it looks like there is going to be no second, third or forth part. I hope.

2."DRIVE"

Tagline - "Get in. Get out. Get away."

I bet you heard about it many times. But haven't you seen it? Even 'big and scary' critic from The Rolling Stone magazine, Peter Travers, loved it! It looks like the story about a stunt driver by day and a getaway driver by night, who is played by handsome and talented Ryan Gosling, is worth of every bit of your attention.
Everything you need to know about it is here.

Release date - September 16, 2011

9. "HUGO"

Young actor Asa Butterfield scares me a bit, but there is Chloe Moretz, Jude Law, Christopher Lee, Helen McCrory and Sacha Baron Cohen to make me more comfortable to watch it. This is new Martin Scorsese's fantastic story, which tell us how living in a Paris train station looks like.

Viggo Mortensen, Michael Fassbender and between them a patient played by Keira Knightley. Unusual and not surely romantic. With such cast it couldn't be bad, so I will definitely see it in the nearest future.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" (2011) - First stills

The first stills from upcoming "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" by Guy Ritchie have been revealed. Holmes and Watson are as usual handsome. Also we've got the first look at the main villain, Professor Moriarty. Don't know why, but I thought they will hide him until some dramatic moment.

"Sherlock Holmes" (2009) - Memorable Quotes

Witty and almost not related to the classic novels written by Arthur Conan Doyle, "Sherlock Holmes" is a good action movie with a bit of mystery. Guy Ritchie along with a great cast (Robert Downey Jr., Jude Law, Mark Strong, Rachel McAdams) did everything they could to make it unusual and interesting. Especially I liked the lines said by Sherlock and other characters.

Mrs. Hudson: I won't go in there by myself, not while he's got a gun in his hand!
Dr. Watson: You don't have to go in there at all.
Mrs. Hudson: What will I do when you leave, doctor? He'll bring the whole house down!
Dr. Watson: He just needs another case, that's all.

Sherlock Holmes: Don't touch. Everything is in its proper place... as per usual, Nanny.
Mrs. Hudson: Oh, he's killed the dog. Again.
Dr. John Watson: What have you done to Gladstone now?
Sherlock Holmes: I was simply testing a new anesthetic. He doesn't mind.

Dr. John Watson: Why is the only woman you've cared about a world class criminal? Are you a masochist?

Sherlock Holmes: Whatever he was working on, he obviously succeeded.
Dr. John Watson: How do you know?
Sherlock Holmes: Otherwise, he'd still be alive.

Sherlock Holmes: Un moment, s'il vous plait. (One moment, please)
Dredger: Je ne suis pas pressé. (I'm not in a hurry.)

Holmes: You've never complained about my methods before.
Dr. Watson: I'm not complaining.
Holmes: You're not? What do you call this?
Dr. Watson: I never complain! How am I complaining? When do I ever complain about you practicing the violin at three in the morning, or your mess, your general lack of hygiene, or the fact that you steal my clothes? Holmes: Uh, we have a barter system...
Dr. Watson: When have I ever complained about you setting fire to my rooms?
Holmes: Our rooms...
Dr. Watson: The rooms! Or, or, the fact that you experiment on my dog?
Holmes: Our dog...
Dr. Watson: The dog!
Holmes: Gladstone is our dog!

Inspector Lestrade: In another life, Mr. Holmes, you would have made a excellent criminal.
Sherlock Holmes: Yes, and you an excellent policeman.

Sir Thomas: Mr. Holmes, apologies for summoning you like this. I'm sure it's quite a mystery as to where you are, and who I am...
Sherlock Holmes: As to where I am, I was, admittedly, lost for a moment, between Charing Cross and Holborn, but I was saved by the bread shop on Saffron Hill. The only baker to use a certain French glaze on their loaves - a Brittany sage. After that, the carriage forked left, then right, and then the tell-tale bump at the Fleet Conduit. And as to who you are, that took every ounce of my not-inconsiderable experience. The letters on your desk were addressed to a Sir Thomas Rotherham. Lord Chief Justice, that would be the official title. Who you really are is, of course, another matter entirely. Judging by the sacred ox on your ring, you're the secret head of the Temple of the Four Orders in whose headquarters we now sit, located on the northwest corner of St. James Square, I think. As to the mystery, the only mystery is why you bothered to blindfold me at all.

Irene Adler: Why are you always so suspicious?
Sherlock Holmes: Should I answer chronologically or alphabetically?

Sherlock Holmes: There is a toxin, refined from the nectar of the rhododendron ponticum. It's quite infamous in the region of Turkey bordering the Black Sea for its ability to induce an apparently mortal paralysis. Enough to deceive even a medical mind as tenacious and well-trained as yours. It's known locally as...
Mary Morstan: What's wrong with Gladstone?
Sherlock Holmes: ...mad honey disease. Oh, he's just demonstrating the very effect I've just described. He doesn't mind.

"Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" (2011) - Trailer #1

"Oh, how I've missed you, Holmes."

Website iTunes movie trailers released the very first trailer of "Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows" directed by Guy Ritchie. Robert Downey Jr. reprises his role as the world's most famous detective, Sherlock Holmes, and Jude Law returns as his formidable colleague, Dr. Watson. Sherlock Holmes has always been the smartest man in the room...until now. There is a new criminal mastermind at large - Professor Moriarty (Jared Harris) - and not only is he Holmes' intellectual equal, but his capacity for evil, coupled with a complete lack of conscience, may actually give him an advantage over the renowned detective. When the Crown Prince of Austria is found dead, the evidence, as construed by Inspector Lestrade (Eddie Marsan), points to suicide. But Sherlock Holmes deduces that the prince has been the victim of murder - a murder that is only one piece of a larger and much more portentous puzzle, designed by one Professor Moriarty. Mixing business with pleasure, Holmes tracks the clues to an underground gentlemen's club, where he and his brother, Mycroft Holmes (Stephen Fry) are toasting Dr. Watson on his last night of bachelorhood. It is there that Holmes encounters Sim (Noomi Rapace), a Gypsy fortune teller, who sees more than she is telling and whose unwitting involvement in the prince's murder makes her the killer's next target.
