Top-5 movies of the week - 17.02 - 23.02

1."Rampart"
Woody Harrelson plays a cop, who hates everyone. He likes his power and beating people. And nobody can stop him, because there will be a huge corruption scandal. Also starring Cynthia Nixon, Sigourney Weaver, Robin Wright, Ben Foster and Steve Buscemi.
Trailer.

2."Thin Ice"
Two men want to earn some money by selling a very valuable violin, which is no use for its present owner. But everything goes wrong, when they end up killing an innocent man. One of these accidental criminals starts blackmailing his associate, who is played by Greg Kinnear. Yes, since that night he is walking on the very thin ice, which can melt very fast under him. Crazy criminal comedy, which has to have an unexpected ending. But I doubt it will be a happy ending.
Trailer.

3."The Secret World of Arrietty"
Tiny people live in one huge house with normal family. They don't want to be discovered, so secretly borrow different things and food. It is dangerous for young girl Arrietty to join her father in such night campaigns, but she is brave. So everything is good, until a boy sees her... and they become good friends. Its creators are the people, who made "Spirited Away" and "Ponyo", it promises many adventures, plus critics love this story.
Trailer.

4."The Vow"
I like Rachel McAdams very much, but I dislike Channing Tatum even more. It was hard to figure out will she save the film, or will he make it bad, and turns out that she wasn't enough. The story is about a newlywed couple, who survives a serious car accident. He is fine, but she lost her memory. She doesn't remember not the whole past, but just him. Low critics rating can frighten the big film-addicts, but the audience says it is ok romantic comedy.
Trailer.

5."Dorothy and the Witches of Oz"
An old fairytale is back thanks to the director Leigh Scott ("Frankenstein Reborn", "King of the Lost World", "Exorcism: The Possession of Gail Bowers"). It is the first not-so-creepy film for him, which kids can actually watch. This time Dorothy is a young writer, who moves to New York. But once she discovers that all her stories aren't a fiction, but memories, she has to go figure out how to fight the evil witch to save the both worlds. It reminds a bit Burton's "Alice In Wonderland". The special effects look good, and the cast includes Christopher Lloyd, Billy Boyd and Sean Astin, who are great actors. So it has to be a nice family film.

Top-5 movies of the week - 03.02 - 09.02

It's been a while since I picked top-5 films of the week, but it's time to continue.

1."The Woman in Black"
I'm not a big fan of horrors, but for this one I waited really long. It's the first film for Daniel Radcliffe since Harry Potter series ended, which is very important, because he has to prove that he won't leave cinema for theatre, and is going to star in different kind of stories. James Watkins' "The Woman in Black" is a very dark and creepy story, so I hope to be scared a few times.
Trailer.

2."Albert Nobbs"
When I heard that Glenn Close is going to play a man I was astonished, but when I saw its first promotional pictures I understood how extraordinary this actress is. A woman dresses up like a man to succeed something in life, but when she falls in love, it threatens to destroy her whole life.
Trailer.

3."Chronicle"
We saw a few films about ordinary people, who want to become superheroes, but "Chronicle" is about people with real power, who doesn't want to save the world. It is the debut of the director, Josh Trank, but it looks like a good action/fantasy story.
Trailer.

4."The Grey"
Liam Neeson plays one of the unfortunate people, whose plain crushed somewhere in Alaska. They want to survive, come back and forget it all happened. But snow and wolves are their worst enemies, which aren't easy to conquer. Directed by Joe Carnahan, it promises to show us a horrifying life and death fight.
Trailer.

5."Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close"
This film must be the one, which surprised many critics, when it got a Oscar nomination for Best Film. But there are Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, who won a few Oscars in their lives. Besides, its director, Stephen Daldry, was nominated for his every film! Impressive team, isn't it?
This story is about the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center, and the consequences. A little boy thinks that his father left some kind of message for him, which he desperately wants to find. So his New York City tour starts and can lead to an unexpected discovery.
P.S. Its trailer almost made me cry.

Top-5 movies of the week - 25.11 - 01.12

1."My Week with Marilyn"
This film tells a story about Marilyn Monroe's first visit to the UK, while she was filming "The Prince and the Showgirl" along with Laurence Olivier. They had a very tense relationship, which made their work incredibly complicated. And then one of the most famous women of all times meets Colin Clark, a 23 year-old assistant, who is charming and totally adores her. They spend together one unforgettable week, which brings Marilyn some crazy thoughts about leaving her world and starting a new life here, in England. But there is a catch. She is a newlywed.
Starring Michelle Williams, Kenneth Branagh, Eddie Redmayne, Dominic Cooper with Emma Watson and Judi Dench.
Directed by Simon Curtis.
Trailer.

2."The Artist"
Its trailer just stole my heart. Modern black-and-white film tells us a story of George Valentin, who is a star of silent films. The era of sound comes and it mean the end of his career while all just starts for young extra Peppy Miller. Their destinies cross, but nobody know for how long. I think it's a great way to make a tribute of charming silent films.
Starring Jean Dujardin, Bérénice Bejo.
Directed and written by Michel Hazanavicius.
Trailer.

3."The Muppets"
On vacation in Los Angeles, Walter, the world's biggest Muppet fan, and his friends Gary and Mary from Smalltown, USA, discover the nefarious plan of oilman Tex Richman to raze the Muppet Theater and drill for the oil recently discovered beneath the Muppets' former stomping grounds. To stage The Greatest Muppet Telethon Ever and raise the $10 million needed to save the theater, Walter, Mary and Gary help Kermit reunite the Muppets, who have all gone their separate ways: Fozzie now performs with a Reno casino tribute band called the Moopets, Miss Piggy is a plus-size fashion editor at Vogue Paris, Animal is in a Santa Barbara clinic for anger management, and Gonzo is a high-powered plumbing magnate. (Official website)
Starring Jason Segel, Amy Adams, Chris Cooper.
Directed by James Bobin.
All trailers, clips and other videos you can find on the official Youtube channel.
"The Pig With The Froggy Tattoo" parody trailer.

4."Hugo"
A story of an orphan boy who lives a secret life in the walls of a Paris train station. An eccentric girl Isabelle helps him while he searches for the answer to a mystery linking the father he recently lost, the ill-tempered toy shop owner living below him and a heart shaped lock, seemingly without a key. Based on Brian Selznick's award winning and imaginative New York Times bestseller called "The Invention of Hugo Cabret", this magical tale is Academy Award-winner Martin Scorsese's first film shot in 3D.
Starring Asa Butterfield, Chloe Moretz, Ben Kingsley, Sacha Baron Cohen, Jude Law.
Directed by Martin Scorsese.
Trailer.

5."Arthur Christmas"
This animated film is going to shows us how the big operation "Christmas" works on the North Pole. The only thing I don't like about it so far - it is a soundtrack.
Directed by Sarah Smith.
And there will be voices of James McAvoy, Hugh Laurie, Jim Broadbent, Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton.

Top-5 movies of the week - 11.11 - 17.11

This week isn't rich in interesting movies, but we've got what we've got.

1."A Very Harold & Kumar Christmas"
First Christmassy film of this season. The same guys found new troubles! They shot Santa (of course, he is real!), have a car accident, get wasted (or stoned) and try to save (destroy) this wonderful holiday. Starring John Cho and Kal Penn, but mostly I like Neil Patrick Harris, who played (a very naughty version of) himself here.
Directed by Todd Strauss-Schulson.
Trailer.

2."Le Havre"
"Le Havre" was presented at the Cannes Film Festival 2011 In Competition. It tells a story of a shoeshiner who tries to save an immigrant child in the French port city Le Havre. Must be very heartbreaking, so critics love it. They say, it is a great dramatic comedy (or occasionally funny drama). If you have a chance, try not to miss this film.
Directed by Aki Kaurismäki.
Trailer.

3."J. Edgar"
Leonardo DiCaprio plays the main part, becoming the one of the most powerful, controversial and enigmatic figures of the 20th century, J. Edgar Hoover. Warner Bros. Pictures promises us to reveal the secrets of his political success. Also starring Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Judi Dench, Ed Westwick. Based on a true story.
Directed by Clint Eastwood.
P.S. Happy Birthday, Leonardo DiCaprio!
Trailer.

4."Immortals"
Another ancient story, where Henry Cavill, Mickey Rourke, John Hurt, Freida Pinto and Kellan Lutz portray heroes, Gods and kings. An epic battle is coming and one man has power to protect and save everyone. I'd watch it just because of that battle, but in trailer it looks poor, comparing to ones I like very much (like in "Lord of the Rings"). Did they even try to make it really epic? Who knows. And there are too much special affects, like in "300" by Zack Snyder, which make it look like a video game, not a film.
Directed by Tarsem Singh.
Trailer.

5."Jack and Jill"
I don't think you should watch this film in your favourite cinema, or ever at all. To be honest, I've never liked Adam Sandler, because his characters are always immature and absolutely not funny. His co-star this time is himself. Yes, Adam plays also a woman here. It looks hideous and sad, though it has to be a comedy. And I wonder why Al Pacino agreed to appear in this 'family movie'.
Directed by Dennis Dugan.
Trailer.

Top-5 movies of the week - 04.11 - 10.11

1."The Rum Diary"
Johnny Depp, Puerto Rico, many empty bottles of rum and one dilemma - to write what is true or to write what one businessman has payed for.
Trailer.
Clips and TV spot.

2."Puss in Boots"
It's like Wolverine got his own film (and a sequel) after being one of the greatest X-men, this cat with Antonio Banderas' voice deserved his, after being a brave hero in "Shrek" series. This story took place before he met big green ogre and his annoying Donkey. Now his only friends are Humpty Dumpty, Kitty Softpaws (voice of Salma Hayek) and his ability to charm anyone with his big cute eyes, which will be very useful in this adventure.
Trailer.

3."Like Crazy"
A romantic story by director Drake Doremus. British girl falls in love with American boy. They had great time together, but her visa is shortly over. She has to go away, though they want to keep this relationship. It is hard to see each other on rare occasions and they consider dating other people when they are apart. This film got the Grand Jury Prize at the 27th Sundance Film Festival. And its trailer is very touching.
Trailer.

4."Killing Bono"
It is a rock'n'roll comedy about two Irish brothers struggling to forge their path through the 1980's music scene... whilst the meteoric rise to fame of their old school pals U2 only serves to cast them deeper into the shadows. (Official website)
Starring Ben Barnes, Robert Sheehan, Krysten Ritter, Peter Serafinowicz.
Trailer.

5."Tower Heist"
A criminal comedy, starring Ben Stiller and Eddie Murphy. They are going to take a revenge on the Wall Street snob, who disrespected his employees by not paying them. Insulted workers teamed up to get their money back, but they have no clue how to do it, that's why it looks more like a parody on "Ocean's Thirteen" (or "Ocean's Eleven"). I like its trailer, but mostly because of Matthew Broderick's sissy character. Directed by Brett Ratner, the filmmaker of the "Rush Hour" trilogy.
Trailer.

Top-5 movies of the week - 21.10 - 27.10

Hi, everyone! I hope you don't forget to watch good movie these rainy days. There are three directorial debuts, which you might like. Maybe one of their filmmakers will become world famous in the next few years. We'll see.

1."Retreat"
Nice couple lives in a picturesque and peaceful place. All seams fine, until one young man runs into their cottage and tells them there is a dangerous virus in the city, so they should be prepared. They've already turned a comfortable house into some sort of bunker when young couple understands that this danger isn't outside. Its trailer reminded me "28 Days Later", but there is a huge difference. You don't know whether out there is an epidemic or that guy is simply insane.
Directed by Carl Tibbetts, it's his debut.
Starring Cillian Murphy, Thandie Newton, Jamie Bell.
Trailer.

2."Oranges And Sunshine"
Based on a true story, this movie tells us about Margaret Humphreys, a social worker from Nottingham, who tries to fix the horrible government's mistake. Many children were forced to move from the United Kingdom to Australia. Now they want to find their relatives, to reunite with families and to discover who they really are. But there is a system, which doesn't like to admit its wrong and inhuman actions and just one woman, who fights it. I should say it is very inspiring story.
Directed by Jim Loach, it's his debut.
Starring Emily Watson and Hugo Weaving with David Wenham.
Trailer.

3."Martha Marcy May Marlene"
Martha, a young woman, calls her sister to pick her up in the middle of nowhere. After returning to their home, she experiences great difficulties to live a normal life. Painful memories and increasing paranoia don't give her a chance to start over. She might have done some horrible things in the past, which now are haunting her. This psychological drama looks to be very tense with some unexpected plot twists.
Directed by T. Sean Durkin, it's his debut.
Starring Elizabeth Olsen, Hugh Dancy.
Trailer.

4."Paranormal Activity 3"
It's the third movie and people aren't still tired of being scared of the same story. I'm not a big fan of horrors, so I haven't even watched its trailer. The one thing you should know: it's prequel, which has to show us how this chilling story begins.
Directed by Henry Joost , Ariel Schulman.
Starring Katie Featherston.
Trailer.

5."The Three Musketeers"
Don't expect from it something huge and impressive. It looks like this new story based on Alexandre Dumas' legendary novel is a disaster of this season. With such strong cast, impressive fights, gorgeous costumes and special effects, this movie hasn't become critics' favorite. Plus you have to over pay, because there is 3D. "The Three Musketeers" is very expensive pop flick and I won't compare it to Guy Ritchie's great "Sherlock Holmes" anymore.
Directed by Paul W.S. Anderson ("Resident Evil", 2002).
Starring Logan Lerman, Luke Evans, Ray Stevenson, Matthew Macfadyen, Milla Jovovich, Orlando Bloom, Christoph Waltz.
Trailer.

Top-5 movies of the week - 14.10 - 20.10

1."The Skin I Live In"
A modern Frankenstein story. Dr. Robert Ledgard, an eminent plastic surgeon, has been interested in creating a new skin since his wife was burned in a car crash. He was possessed by this idea and after twelve years, he manages to make a skin that is a real shield against every assault. Now he needs to be patient to take vengeance on his worst enemy. This movie looks like a very tense mystic thriller.
Directed and written by Pedro Almodóvar.
Starring Antonio Banderas, Elena Anaya.
Trailer.

2."Footloose"
A remake of a 1984 movie, which due to critic Roger Ebert has the same script. If you saw the original, you could pretend you're re-watching it. If you haven't seen it, you should know it is a story about a guy, who was forced to move from Boston to a small town. There is a very strict order with a ban of dancing and loud music. So he challenges this system and even falls in love. With good soundtrack and lively atmosphere, this movie can make you dance.
Directed by Craig Brewer.
Starring Kenny Wormald,Julianne Hough, Andie MacDowell.
Trailer.

3."The Thing"
In the thriller "The Thing", paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they're infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet. Paleontologist Kate Lloyd has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up. When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter, to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish. "The Thing" serves as a prelude to John Carpenter's classic 1982 film of the same name. (Official website)
Directed by Matthijs van Heijningen Jr.
Starring Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Ulrich Thomsen.
Trailer.

4."The Big Year"
Three man are at a crossroads -- one is experiencing a mid-life crisis, another a late-life crisis, and the third, a far from ordinary no-life crisis. From David Frankel, the director of The Devil Wears Prada and Marley & Me, comes a sophisticated comedy about three friendly rivals who, tired of being ruled by obligations and responsibilities, dedicate a year of their lives to following their dreams. Their big year takes them on a cross-country journey of wild and life-changing adventures. (Official website) And its soundtrack rocks!
(Official website)
Directed by David Frankel.
Starring Owen Wilson, Jack Black, Steve Martin.
Trailer.

5."Happy Life"
Keith, a happy hardcore obsessed record store owner, is desperate to stay afloat in modern day NYC. Will an old-school rave be his ticket back to the top? Or will candy necklaces and glow sticks be the death nails in his techno coffin? (Official website) Why did I choose it? I like its synopsis.
Directed and written by Michael M. Bilandic.
Starring Tom McCaffrey.

Top-5 movies of the week - 07.10 - 13.10

1."Real Steel"
A gritty, white-knuckle, action ride set in the near-future where the sport of boxing has gone high-tech, "Real Steel" stars Hugh Jackman as Charlie Kenton, a washed-up fighter who lost his chance at a title when 2000-pound, 8-foot-tall steel robots took over the ring. Now nothing but a small-time promoter, Charlie earns just enough money piecing together low-end bots from scrap metal to get from one underground boxing venue to the next. When Charlie hits rock bottom, he reluctantly teams up with his estranged son Max (Dakota Goyo) to build and train a championship contender. As the stakes in the brutal, no-holds-barred arena are raised, Charlie and Max, against all odds, get one last shot at a comeback. Directed by Shawn Levy who isn't a critics' favorite, it still may have a chance to earn lots of money. I'm sure Hugh did everything he can to make this movie more interesting. And the kid plays not bad at all.
Trailers.
Posters and some thoughts.

2."The Ides of March"
George Clooney not only just starred in this movie, but also directed it. It's not the first time he's playing in being director. The previous one was movie called "Leatherheads" and only the half of the critics liked it (audience liked it even less). "The Ides of March" are more successful. It is a story about a politician and his assistant, who really helps him to become the President of the USA. Of course, George Clooney kept for himself the big part and due to trailer he looks confident playing the one who is about to be the President. I'm more interested in someone, who is portraying his successful assistant. Ryan Gosling is one of the best actors nowadays, so it's not a big surprise that this is the third movie he presents this year. His character looks more interesting and complicated, because he has to choose between loyalty and his beliefs.
Trailer.

3."Toast" (2010)

This movie is about a boy who has a big talent in cooking, when his mother dreams about becoming a chef, but she can make just a good toast. After her death the stepmother arrives and she is definitely a wonderful cook. So competition between young Nigel and Mrs. Potter begins. IMDB says it is "The ultimate nostalgia trip through everything edible in 1960's Britain" and I totally agree with these words. Starring Freddie Highmore and Helena Bonham Carter, this movie is dramatic, smart and tasty. Both actors played great their roles. And it was very interesting to watch their characters relationship.

Trailer and press conference.

4."1911"
I must be honest. Critics hate this movie. They say it is 'overlong, disjointed' and 'bombastic, incoherent'. But I doubt it is that bad. I will definitely watch this story about China revolution, human strength and hope, when I get a chance. It has to be not bad historical drama, where Jackie Chan plays a very serious part.
Trailer and full synopsis.

5."The Way" (2010)
"The Way" is a powerful and inspirational story about family, friends, and the challenges we face while navigating this ever-changing and complicated world. Martin Sheen plays Tom, an American doctor who comes to St. Jean Pied de Port, France to collect the remains of his adult son (played by Emilio Estevez), killed in the Pyrenees in a storm while walking the Camino de Santiago, also known as The Way of Saint James. On "The Way," Tom meets other pilgrims from around the world, each with their own issues and looking for greater meaning in their lives: a Dutchman (Yorick van Wageningen), a Canadian (Deborah Kara Unger) and an Irish writer (James Nesbitt), who is suffering from a bout of writer's block. Top-5 movies of the week - 30.09 - 06.10

1."Tucker and Dale vs Evil"
Yes, this is my number 1 of this week. If you have a good sense of humor, you'll like this insane black comedy. This movie is meaningless and a bit gross, but I started crying because of laugher while watching it. Some stupid students are taking a road trip and meeting two creepy-looking guys in the dark forest. They misunderstood each other actions and this trip becomes very bloody. Do not watch its trailer, if you don't like spoilers - there are many hilarious moments and I'd enjoyed a movie less, if I saw the trailer first.
Starring Tyler Labine, Alan Tudyk, directed by Eli Craig.
Trailer.

2."50/50"
Inspired by a true story, it is an original story about friendship, love, survival and finding humor in unlikely places. Cancer changes the lives of two best friends, but they don't give up, remaining optimistic and funny. Critics name it 'a laugh-out-loud comedy that demands to be seen', 'extremely funny and romantic' and even 'one of the best movies of the year'.
Starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Seth Rogen, Anna Kendrick, Bryce Dallas Howard, directed by Jonathan Levine.
Trailer.

3."Dream House"
It is a story about a married couple, two little girls and one scary house. Firstly, this movie seems to be an ordinary horror, but there are lots of mysteries. Their new great family house turns out to be a crime scene, where a mother with her children was murdered. New tenants begin to investigate that old story and the more they discover the more they understand that they can be next victims.
For those who can't miss any horror movie with good cast.
Starring Daniel Craig, Rachel Weisz, Naomi Watts, directed by Jim Sheridan.
Trailer.

4."Take Shelter"
Curtis LaForche lives in a small Ohio town with his wife Samantha and six-year-old daughter Hannah, who is deaf. Money is tight, and navigating Hannah's healthcare and special needs education is a constant struggle. Despite that, Curtis and Samantha are very much in love and their family is a happy one. Then Curtis begins having terrifying dreams about an encroaching, apocalyptic storm. Faced with the proposition that his disturbing visions signal disaster of one kind or another, Curtis confides in Samantha, testing the power of their bond against the highest possible stakes. (Official movie website)
Starring Jessica Chastain, Michael Shannon, directed by Jeff Nichols.

So when a filmmaker friend asks him to teach guitar lessons to TV star Danny Turner for his upcoming movie role, Goh jumps at the chance. While on tour together, things get complicated when Goh's high school flame Rachel shows up. (Official movie website)
More than half critics liked this movie, but due to Rotten Tomatoes audience, this story is worth more.
Starring Goh Nakamura, Chadd Stoops, Lynn Chen, directed by Dave Boyle.

Based on a true story, "Moneyball" is a movie for anybody who has ever dreamed of taking on the system. Forced to reinvent his team on a tight budget, Beane will have to outsmart the richer clubs. The onetime jock teams with Ivy League grad Peter Brand (Jonah Hill) in an unlikely partnership, recruiting bargain players that the scouts call flawed, but all of whom have an ability to get on base, score runs, and win games. 2."Weekend"
"One of the best gay films ever made, although that pigeonholes it unfairly, as this is a finely observed, bracingly intelligent and human work, with an appeal that crosses sexual categorization." - David Noh (Film Journal International)
This movie is a winner of Audience Awards at both SXSW and Outfest 2011 and the opening night selection of Brooklyn's acclaimed BAMcinemafest. It is a startlingly authentic love story, featuring the talents of two incredible new actors and the unique work of a fresh new voice in filmmaking, Andrew Haigh. After meeting one lonely Friday night at a bar, Russell (Tom Cullen) and Glen (Chris New) find themselves caught up in an lost weekend full of sex, drugs, and intimate conversation. 3."Dolphin Tale"
"A heart-warming story that is one of the best family movies of the year." - Nell Minow (Beliefnet)

4."Pearl Jam Twenty"
In celebration of their 20th Anniversary, Pearl Jam will debut Pearl Jam Twenty, a definitive portrait of the band as told by Academy Award®-winning filmmaker and music journalist, Cameron Crowe, at the 2011 Toronto International Film Festival in September. The film, Pearl Jam Twenty, is told in big themes and bold colors with blistering sound, and chronicles the years leading up to the band’s formation, the chaos that ensued soon-after being catapulted into superstardom, their step back from the spotlight with the instinct of self-preservation, and the creation of a trusted circle that would surround them—giving way to a work culture that would sustain them. The film celebrates the freedom that allows the band to make music without losing themselves, their fans, or the music lovers they’d always been. (Official website)
Trailer.

5."Puncture"
Mike Weiss (Chris Evans) is a talented young Houston lawyer and a functioning drug addict. Paul Danziger (co-director Mark Kassen), his longtime friend and partner, is the straightlaced and responsible yin to Mike’s yang. Their mom-and-pop personal-injury law firm is getting by, but things really get interesting when they decide to take on a case involving Vicky (Vinessa Shaw), a local ER nurse, who is pricked by a contaminated needle on the job. As Weiss and Danziger dig deeper into the case, a health care and pharmaceutical conspiracy teeters on exposure and heavyweight attorneys move in on the defense. Out of their league but invested in their own principles, the mounting pressure of the case pushes the two underdog lawyers and their business to the breaking point. Brothers and directors Mark and Adam Kassen bring this real-life story to the screen with all the urgency and passion of the subjects themselves. The result is an effective issue-driven drama that finds its footing in a contemporary David and Goliath story. (Official movie website)
